Dating Dr. Dil follows an Indian-American man and woman who choose to partake in a marriage of convenience where one individual is hellbent on only marrying for love, while the other is "love-phobic." A series of enthralling events follow, and throughout the course of the novel, the pair ultimately fall in love.
This book is such an interesting perspective of the Indian-American culture I felt, as someone who is not entirely familiar with it. Sharma's writing is extremely immersive, and though I feel as though the extensive vocabulary might typically be off-putting, she managed to make it work exceptionally well. I love to see inclusivity become more and more widespread, and truly enjoyed learning more about this culture while simply relishing in a genuinely unique and enjoyable love story.
Selling points for me consisted of multiple instances of hilarity and our whip-quick female MC who takes no sh*t from anyone, male or female alike. Meddling aunties and other notable family members only added to the humor and complexity of the novel -- I have to give credit to Sharma for developing such fun, interesting side characters. As it seems Dating Dr. Dil is the start of a series, I'm hoping we'll continue to see these familiar faces in other stories to come.
All in all, Dating Dr. Dil is the perfect read for fans of Never Have I Ever and Ten Things I Hate About You. Anyone interested in a romantic comedy following an underrepresented culture should certainly pick up this book and look out for Sharma's work to come.
